You don’t have to be gay, black, indigenous, white, transgender, a Drug lord, alchemist, vampire, etc. to write about that character. That’s ridiculous. However, if you are going to portray that main character as being gay, then it’s better to be familiar with it on a personal level before trying to pretend.
